The Tudors

King Henry VIII (r. 1509-1547)

King Henry VIII asked the Catholic Church for permission to divorce his wife after she didn’t have a son. The Pope denied his petition, as divorce is sinful.

When Henry VIII died in 1547 he did not have any sons to take his place so his first daughter, Mary became Queen

Mary I (r. 1553-1558)

A devout Catholic, Mary wanted to convert England back to Catholicism by force and eliminate Protestantism. Protestants who refused were executed, earning Mary the nickname “Bloody Mary”
