It is important to remember that regions are defined by what they share, no matter what type of region they are.

Concept 1 | Region Types

Formal Functional Perceptual
An area with one or more measurable traits, such as climate, language, etc. Regions that are defined by a system of interactions.
A region that is defined by people’s feelings and attitudes about an area.
All formal regions are based on measurable data. All functional regions are based on interactions such as transportation, communication, and trade. All perceptual regions are based on feelings.
Examples: The United States, the Sahara Desert. Examples: Houston Metro Area, DFW Airport Examples: The South, Southern California
