The Council of Trent

The Council of Trent was called by Pope Paul III.  Council leaders met in Trent in Northern Italy to create a statement of Catholic doctrine [beliefs] and correct abuses in the church.  The Council consisted of Catholic bishops and cardinals [high-ranking church officials].

The Council met intermittently [from time-to-time] between 1545 and 1563.  It decreed [announced]:

To curb [stop] abuses in the church, the Council of Trent issued several decrees, including:
